Vintage Summer Style Exhibit at FIDM

Summer has arrived, so what better time to take a look at a vintage summer style exhibit for those hot days ahead? Clever Vintage Clothing recently showed off a little bit of their carefully curated inventory in a special exhibit for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM).

“Swingin’ Summer Vintage California Resort Wear” opened with a party drawing FIDM students and vintage clothes lovers. Clever’s Dave Temple and Sabino Gutierrez gave a walk through the exhibit explaining the top designers and clothing detailing of the eras of the 1940s-1960s.

See the video of the Vintage Summer Style Exhibit:

The exhibit runs one week through July 14th but if you can’t make it down, you just might catch these amazing pieces FOR SALE at one of Clever’s upcoming vendor events:

  •  July 29: Pickwick Gardens, Burbank
  • August 11: Helm’s Design District, Culver City
  • August 16-19: Tiki Oasis, San Diego

Stay cool,

How to Correctly Apply Perfume

The last thing I do before I leave the house is give myself a spritz of perfume. A scent can be as much of an accessory as your favorite pair of heels. I discovered a perfume that combines both – Nine West’s Love Fury. This bottle of perfume literally stopped me in my tracks when I spotted it in a store window – the cap is actually a stiletto heel! I would buy it just for the bottle but thank goodness it smells great – a blend of fruits and florals with mild notes of amber.  A great smell is one thing, but do you know how to correctly apply perfume?

Video: How to Correctly Apply Perfume

Once you find the scents that appeal to you and represent your personality, it can only go so far if you don’t know how to apply perfume to get the most out of it. And here’s a tip, you don’t have to use much. Learn more in my video on how to apply perfume correctly:

June Weddings: Celebrity Dress Picks

June is a upon us and that means wedding season. A recent wave of celebrity engagement announcements had me wondering which of the famous couples would give us some June brides and when they do – what, or rather WHOM, will they be wearing?

I picked five famous brides-to-be and did a little dress shopping on their behalf to pick styles I think would suit them. Some of these not-so-traditional dresses are so cool I want to wear them just for a fancy night out!

5 Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Tips to Green Your Summer

Summer is here and that means warmer temperatures, outdoor fun and vacation time. All that sunshine should serve as a friendly reminder that there are things you can do to green your summer:

Keep cool. Warmer temperatures mean using the air conditioner more. Cut back with other ways to stay cool. I’m a big fan of fans. I have one in each room and they keep my place surprising cool with the air circulation. Or as Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) executive director, Ted Ning suggests, “Open windows in the morning and on the opposite sides of the room to allow a natural flow of coolness and moisture through your home.”

Also try insulating window treatments such as glass films and heat reflecting drapes to reduce the amount of warmth that comes in. If your property allows it, consider solar panels. I recently discovered solar shutters that absorb that sunshine and put it on your energy grid! It’s a great solution for renters or condo owners.

Dress wisely. When shedding layers for lighter options, look for fashions made with organic cotton, which means it is produced on farms that use methods that have a low impact on the environment. Or instead of buying new, shop your closet for items you’ve forgotten about. I also wear a lot of vintage fashion – the ultimate reuse clothing. I love the styles from eras past and each piece is one of a kind, which definitely adds some personality to my wardrobe.

Eat smart. Yum, fresh juicy summer fruits are a delight of summer – but harmful pesticides do not sound tasty. Know what you’re biting into – each piece of produce in your grocery store has a sticker with a code on it. Go for “fine number 9,” which means the fruit is organically grown. A code that starts with 4 means it is conventionally grown – and sprayed. You’ll probably find more organic choices at a farmer’s market, which also helps you keep it local, and it’s a great day out! Eco lifestyle expert and author of “The Conscious Kitchen,” Alexandra Zissu offers this suggestion, “Talk to farmers and ask what they use to spray. Some use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is almost as good as organic. Another good resource is the Environmental Working Group’s dirty dozen and clean fifteen lists to find out which fruits contain the least amount of pesticide residues.”

Protect your skin.  A few minutes of sun is good for Vitamin D but more than that and the sun’s UV rays can damage skin. That means wrinkles and skin cancer – yuck! To keep skin beautiful and youthful, be sure to have some fresh sunscreen on hand and just like the food you eat, read the ingredient labels. According to LOHA’s Ning, “Some some sunscreens can contribute to cancer due to their mutagenic and free radical generating properties. Zinc oxide is a mineral that provides complete UVB/UVA protection.” Some green sunscreens options include Kabana, Coola  and MyChelle. If you really want a tan, opt for a sunless tanning lotion. Lavera makes an organic, award-winning self tanner.

Vacation time! Summer is a great time to getaway but transportation can put a big dent in your carbon footprint. I love taking a “staycation” and just being at home, seeing friends and catching up on much-needed sleep. When you do travel, pick destinations that are walkable or check listings for cab companies that use hybrid vehicles. Hotels are also becoming more socially responsible. Orbitz has listings for eco-friendly options. If you find yourself being quite the jet-setter, CabonFund provides a way to calculate your carbon offset and donate to your choice of carbon-reducing projects.

So enjoy your summer, be healthy and do the same for the planet.

Mini Makeup Palettes: Looking Good on the Go

A much as I love the ritual of getting ready, putting on makeup, experimenting with color, trying a new look, using just the right makeup brush, sometimes I simply don’t have time. Peggy Moffitt: An Icon at MOCA

If there is one icon of the ‘60s, it’s model Peggy Moffitt – the face, the eye makeup, the poses. When you see an image of her from that time, it immediately takes you back to that colorful era of the youthquake movement and the fashion, oh the fashion – bold colorful prints, mini skirts, angular shapes and cut-outs. I love it so much!

The Museum of Modern Art (MOCA) just put together a retrospective collection of Peggy Moffitt photos and films that focuses on her collaboration with fashion designer Rudi Gernreich and her photographer husband William Claxton. “The Total Look” exhibit is two full floors of eye candy at MOCA’s Pacific Design Center location that will send any ‘60s lover to the moon with walls lined with Peggy’s famous photos (some never seen before!) mannequins wearing the actual garments and films of her doing her famous moves. We get a look at her inspiring makeup (that she reportedly did herself), and of course that cutting edge Vidal Sassoon haircut.

Opening night was packed with MOCA members, retro hipsters, fashion’s elite, and those who were part of the ‘60s scene such as hairdresser-to-the-stars/ “Upper Cut” author Carrie White. Just as I thought my eyes were overwhelmed with all the fabulous imagery and clothing, Peggy Moffitt herself walked in the door! I couldn’t believe it. She still looks as amazing as ever – though in her elder years, she’s slim, still sporting her blunt black haircut and dark eye-makeup and dressed ever so stylish. Crowds swarmed around her as she made her way through the exhibit with her son, Christopher Claxton, as her escort.

All I can say is thank goodness Sabino from Clever Vintage showed up and was brave enough to ask her for a photo because I was so star-struck I couldn’t do it myself! Thank you Sabino! By the way, I did wear a Clever Vintage ‘60s frock to the event!

Click the image below to see the slideshow of the night:

What a spectacular night. Thank you MOCA for putting this together and thank you to the fabulous Peggy Moffitt – forever an icon!

The Total Look: The Creative Collaboration Between Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, And William Claxton is on display through May 27 at the MOCA Pacific Design Center.

Swing it!

Michelle Phan: Glamour Star

I love YouTube makeup videos. I’m so grateful to makeup artists who put these out because I’ve learned so many tips and tricks to create new looks for the seasons, for retro inspired outfits, and of course glamorous nights out. One of the most famous artists is Michelle Phan, who became such a web sensation with her makeup tutorials that she was hired by Lancôme Cosmetics to begin demonstrating ways to use their products. Now Michelle has launched her own limited-edition kit for Lancôme. The set is called Glamour Eyes and features the “Chic by Chelle” palette used to create three different looks Michelle designed herself – natural, diva and a smoldering eye look (Michelle’s personal favorite.) The kit also includes inky Artliner Precision Point EyeLiner and Hypnose Drama Instant Full Body Volume mascara.

And nothing promotes makeup like Michelle herself, so she went on the road like a makeup rock star to make appearances at Sephora, signing the kit and meeting fans that have only seen her on their computer screens.

What would have been an otherwise quiet Monday evening at Glendale’s Americana at Brand outdoor mall, was lit up with eager girls, clutching their newly purchased palettes that entitled them to a wristband for a signing. The line  eventually ran all the down to the back of the store as makeup fans waited patiently to  see their YouTube idol up close.

Michelle arrived to cheers from the crowd, her petite frame stylishly dressed in a light beige, softly scallop-textured dress and killer high heels (love ya for that!) and of course her hair and makeup were flawless! She sweetly greeted and hugged each fan, signed their kit, and sent them off with a smile to try their new look.

Bellejar Vintage: Going Out with Belles On

The New Year is upon us and what better time to shop for a new frock? I recently walked my stilettos over to Bellejar Vintage for their holiday party and it was a little piece of shopping heaven. Great pieces, great prices – even a $5 rack where my friend Fabby found the most fabulous tangerine-colored mod shift dress – which will put her right in fashion since tangerine tango was voted Pantone’s color of 2012. Bellejar frequently has little shopping parties with bands and we couldn’t help but the notice the good-looking crowd of shaggy-haired, alt-rock boys and gorgeous pin-up beauty queens that turned up. Owner Katie Stratton is one stylish dame herself and didn’t disappoint in a festive red-trimmed frock, pout and ruby sparkle shoes. Check the place out! See photos from the party by clicking the link below:
