Big Kid

I’m a big kid. I love kitschy, crazy pop culture toys. I have a collection of retro lunchboxes I used to carry as purses (Addams Family, the Archies, Laugh-In) and silly dolls from The Fonz to Pee-Wee Herman adorn my bookshelves.

That’s why I have to hold myself back when I walk into a store like Big Kid. This tiny little treasure trove tucked into the corner of a non-descript mini mall in the far north end of Sherman Oaks is bursting with every kind of cool retro toy and candy you can imagine.

And when I say hold myself back, I really mean it. We’re talking a Penelope Pitstop statuette people! That’s not just a want, that’s a NEED. I could spend hours just wandering around this store with its assortment of jack-in-the-boxes, action heroes, games, lunchboxes, Barbie dolls, t-shirts, bobble-heads, magic tricks, secret spy agent gear, even candy and food items.

Take peek for yourself:

To the big kid in all of us,

Golden Globes 2011

I love award shows, it’s my guilty pleasure to sit and watch the parade of fashions and, as a regular movie-goer, cheer on my favorites.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been to a few shows. As an entertainment reporter for the Los Angeles Times a few years back, I’ve worked several red carpets and backstage press rooms and while it’s not as glamorous as it seems (spending hours in the hot sun waiting for the stars to arrive) it is always fun to meet those you admire, see what they look like up close, and get as dressed up as they do –  by now you know I love to strap on a good pair of heels!

It is however, much nicer to watch at home, without being jostled by fellow journalists and paparazzi, and I simply must chime in on my favorites for this year’s Golden Globes…

While I did like the Social Network very much, I’m hoping the King’s Speech takes the Oscar because I enjoyed it more and I really thought Geoffrey Rush should’ve taken best supporting role – he is great in everything he does. On Natalie Portman for Black Swan, yes, she displayed good acting, being a convincing ballerina isn’t easy. But I wasn’t wild about the film, it just wasn’t a likeable character. I was really happy to see Glee win, I’ve become a big fan of that show for its clever wit and honest writing – best acceptance speech of the night definitely goes to Chris Colfer!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qDf1b1CLJo]

But enough about that – My picks for best dressed:

Catherine Zita Jones – always elegant, she looked like queen of the ball in a emerald brocade gown and the best accessory of the night, hubby Michael Douglas in remission.

Scarlett Johanssonher upswept whoosh of a hairdo with diamond-encrusted clips was a stunning and dramatic top for a delicate peachy, vintage-inspired gown.

Olivia Wilde – this sparkly number was an eye-catcher and perfect fit. I loved that it was chocolate brown, the warm color really made it pop.

January Jones – I like that she takes risks, especially this bright red, cut-out stunner, a far cry from her prime ‘50s housewife character, Betty Draper.

Milla Jovovich – striking in an icy silver mermaid gown, understated makeup, and side swept locks.

Worst dressed:

Helena Bonham Carter – no surprise here. As a former goth girl, I usually love her quirky, dark style but this was just the look of a mad woman!

Sandra Bullock loved her new shaggy rocker hairdo but it was too heavy atop a pale, sparkly gown.

Christina Aguilerais it me or she is bigger than usual? This fitted lacy number doesn’t help, making her look stuffed-in and bloated.

Another one for the fashion files,
K.

Happy New You!

It’s a new year, a time to start fresh, recover from the holiday madness, and make resolutions. One of mine for this year is to take better care of my skin. I found a great place to conquer this at a new, all-organic spa in Los Feliz. Heaven Skin Spa was opened by two sisters, Suchana and Tanawan, who both perfected their skills working at other spas around town. This intimate space is focused just on treatment with two rooms – one for the face and one for the body. Their prices are extremely reasonable, which makes it affordable to schedule on a regular basis (be sure to check out their special deals!)

Their services include facials, massage and waxing. I go for the facials, which are so relaxing I usually fall asleep for part of it – I swear Suchana has magic hands! They will examine your skin to determine the best treatment to do at that moment. The products they use are all natural from the Éminence Handmade Organic Skin Care of Hungary line and everything smells delicious. Every time I walk out of there, my skin is glowing, not just for hours, for days. Heaven really is a good name for this place!

Keeping up your looks also requires a good hair stylist. When you find one you like, you’ll stick with them for years and I found Elizabeth at Ellouise Salon in Pasadena after another salon’s hairdresser destroyed my hair by applying the wrong color then over-bleaching to try to get it out. A co-worker saw my ravaged hair and gave me Elizabeth’s number telling me she was an expert colorist. She took my damaged locks and reworked the color (see “after” photo above.) She’s been gently nursing it back to health for the past couple of years. She’s also great with cuts – I love the way she does long layers.

Another treat I discovered at Elloise, is makeup artist Rachelle. There’s nothing like having a professional apply your makeup to learn new tips and tricks. Rachelle taught me how to do smoky eye with a pop of color. I also have her wax my eyebrows – quick, painless, and at a great price. They look so good when she’s done I don’t  have to shade them in at all!

I also love the atmosphere at Ellouise, the place looks like a gothic loft you’d find tucked away in an old castle – owner Sandi is an animal activist, world traveler and supporter of the local arts community. The salon has rotating art installations and opening receptions, as well as jewelry sales by local designers, which often sparks some lively creative conversations while you’re getting your hair and makeup done.

Here’s to a Happy New YOU!

Mad about Mad Men

I love Mad Men. Seriously, I eat each episode like candy, soaking up the fashions, the art direction and, since I currently work in advertising, a little history on the culture and the business. So I got pretty excited when I learned, upon watching the behind the scenes DVD of season 3, about an illustrator named Dyna Moe who is responsible for the images used in the “Mad Men Yourself” feature on the web as well as episode drawings that have become viral hits. She recently put out a book, “Mad Men: The Illustrated World.”  In a reading at the store, Book Soup in W. Hollywood, Dyna talked about the inspiration of her drawings that began with a Christmas card request from Rich Sommer (aka Harry Crane.) She took us on a journey through ’50s and ’60s era advertising illustrations that influenced her own. As a bonus, not one but two actual Mad Men were in the house to read from her book Rich Sommer and Michael Gladis (aka Paul Kinsey.)

Now you just can’t beat that for an evening as cool as a cocktail made by Don Draper!

Cheers,
K.

ReVamping Vintage Fashions

In a hip little penthouse lost downtown is a store and workshop called ReVamp, which makes vintage recreations from the period between 1910-1950.  Owned by the ever-stylish Annamarie von Firley (who can always be spotted in a crowd because of her fashion sense and canary-yellow bob), this retro designer makes clothes for the vintage lover and many TV and film productions from a workshop/store that sits in the penthouse stuite of the historic Platt building, wedged between the Broadway Bar and the Orpheum Theatre. They also host weekend retro hair and makeup workshops to teach you how to get the right look to match your period outfits. Other events include fashion shows for their latest collection that was cute indeed! See their super-cute fashions by clicking the link below:

Happy Retro Holidays!

‘Tis the season, the holidays have begun, the mad shopping, the cooking and baking, the events. Mine got off to a good start in Magnolia Park for their Holiday Extravaganza. This little strip of shops in Burbank, from Hollywood Way to Buena Vista, has undergone quite a revitalization while still retaining the charm of a ‘50s neighborhood, a time when people strolled along sidewalks and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Some amazing shops have moved in, including a couple I have among my list of favorites in all of Los Angeles.

On this particular evening, the entire street was shut down for several blocks to make for much merriment, including an enormous flat bed “Caroling Truck” that rolled through the crowd decked out like Santa’s workshop, complete with singing and dancing Santas, and a snow blower.

Of course I couldn’t resist popping into Mindfulnest, a store featuring creations by local artists, many who donate proceeds to various causes. You can’t help but feel like you’re giving something back when you buy a gift for someone here – and trust me, they have something unique for everyone – jewelry, art, scented lotions and potions and unique knick knacks. The store has been so successful since opening in Burbank last year, they recently opened another in Santa Monica.

My next stop was a store that has filled my closet with some of my favorite treasures – Playclothes, a vintage-lover’s dream. Even though it was crazy crowded on this night, I couldn’t help but pick up a leopard-print pillbox hat and yellow-gold 1950’s handbag. Their prices are the best of any vintage store I know of and the quality is top notch. The shopkeepers are always friendly and if you put them to task to find something specific, they won’t stop looking through their massive inventory until they find it. They proved this when they found the perfect hot pink, flutter ruffle wrap dress for me to wear to an upcoming 1970’s-themed disco party.

Check out what these stores have to offer in these quick slideshows:

Be sure to check out these shops and all of the upcoming events in the neighborhood on the Magnolia Park website.

Happy shopping!

Viva Italia in LA!

Stiletto_City_heel_iconSZDIt was Italian culture week in LA with the Cinema Italian Style film fest and art exhibits happening all over town. I got an eyeful of glamorous Italian fashion at the Istituto Italiano Di Cultura’s “50s and La Dolce Vita Style” exhibit. It was a great night to dress up with my gal pals and walk the red carpet. We felt like we had stepped into a dream as the space was filled with bright artwork, vintage dresses, shoes, hats and handbags. We ooohed and aaahed over the flowing black siren dress worn by Anita Ekberg in Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.” We drooled over gorgeous accessories with exquisite details, and  I was absolutely loving the artwork of Brivido Pop – big, colorful rip ‘n’ tear pop collages of film icons from Ekberg to Hepburn, Bardot and Loren. I just wanted to take it all home!

See the slideshow from the exhibit.

Because I just couldn’t get enough, a few nights later I went to the Jeanie Madsen gallery for the opening reception of another room full of Brivido Pop’s eye candy pieces. I was also quite taken with the beautiful mechanism pieces by Dale Mathis, whose bold, dark wood and steel coffee tables and desks are embedded with industrial gears that flow and turn like meditative rivers through his work.  Madsen’s cute space she dubs, “a museum boutique,” is right on the water of Ocean Avenue, adjacent to (lucky!) apartment dwellers and another gallery next door. She also reserves a section for local fashion designs (including her own) with unique offerings of clothes and accessories. She keeps it lively with lots of events so check it out!

I closed the week with taste of the Cinema Italian Style Film Festival, sponsored by American Cinematheque, seeing Italy’s official Oscar Submission for best foreign-language film, “La Prima Cosa Bella” (The First Beautiful Thing) at the Egyptian Theatre. This romp through a small Italian town follows the journey of a local beauty queen who must do what she can to maintain her upbeat spirit around her two children through some unfortunate choices in men, a stint in the movies, and later, dealing with old age and illness. Lead Anna (played by Micaela Ramazzotti and Stefania Sandrelli) is a delightful character whose charm is infectious. You find yourself cheering her on even through the hardest times.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go rent “La Dolce Vita,”

Who’s Up for Cocktails?

Now us girls like a good excuse to wear every bit of fabulousness we have in our closet, so what better way to bust out some of my best vintage and blingy baubles than Wet Set Socials? Hosted by the lovely Sandra D. — known as mistress of the retro hairstyle workshops  – WSS recently celebrated its one year anniversary of good excuses to dress up and head out to a beautiful setting.

This time, our gaggle of girls crowded into the red velvet, half-circle booths of Ivan’s Kane’s Café Was in Hollywood. This little piano lounge and bistro, founded by the man who runs burlesque club Forty Deuce, is great place to grab a classy gourmet meal and entertainment in a setting  worthy of a pulp fiction novel. In the spotlight was the flirty, swingin’ jazz torch singing of Tiba. Now it’s been said that Tiba will not perform in a place that won’t let her climb atop the piano and if you’ve seen her perform, you’d know why – it’s a true lesson in seduction!

So a toast to a night of good fun and friends – congratulations to Wet Set Social for capping a full year of stiletto-worthy evenings!

Trip Report: La Dolce Vita in Italy

Ciao from Italy!

You might say I’m an “Italianophile.” I fell in love with Italy on my first trip to Rome a few years ago, and again when I camped through Tuscany. So I was pretty sure I was destined for love again as we flew into Milan, grabbed a rental car and headed for the Riviera. There was a little rain on the way but by the time we hit the coast, the skies opened up and welcomed us to Santa Margherita where we checked into a cute little B&B, the Hotel Mediterraneo, and set out for the marina to walk along the crystal blue water and have some pasta. The next morning, feeling weary after little jet-lagged sleep, we decided to forgo our ambitious sightseeing plans in favor of lounging on our spacious deck with an amazing view of the Italian hillside spread out before our eyes. There is nothing like sipping cappuccino on a lounge chair, wrapped in a blanket, reading the Italian section of “Eat Pray Love” with a view of this amazing country to gaze out on between cat naps. La dolce vita indeed! We didn’t think it could get any better than that – until we hit our next spot!

Cinque Terre

We drove over to Cinque Terre only to be greeted with a cheerful eyeful of pastel, jewel-tone buildings stacked along the hillsides toward the water. We booked an apartment in Riomaggiore, one of the five villages that put the cinque in Cinque Terre. Our little balcony gave us a bird’s eye view of the neighborhood – mom & pop markets with fresh produce stands, bakeries filling the street with delizioso smells of sweet treats, and pizzerias stacked more types of pizza by the slice than I ever dreamed possible. We felt like instant residents as we took the opportunity to wash some clothes in the lavenderia and hang them on the clothesline outside our window. Riomaggiore was decidedly less touristy than the other towns – and we know this because we explored 4 out of the 5 – taking the gorgeously romantic Walk of Love, a scenic path along the water where people pen their expressions of affection on benches, walls, even plant leaves. I had a platter of scrumptious local seafood in Manarola then we took a walk up the vineyard path around the hills for even more breathtaking views of the village and the coastline. Our last day was rained out, putting a wrench in our sightseeing, but we were OK with staying in for a nap to get ready for the next place. However, we weren’t sure if it could possibly get better than here. We were wrong!

Lake Como

A drive through rainy Italy took us up to Lake Como where again, the skies cleared upon our arrival revealing the most stunning of all of our destinations thus far. We just about fainted at the view from our hilltop hotel Eremo Gaudio with the most perfect postcard vision of the lake, the mountains and the town of Veranna. We joked that our invite for tea at George Clooney’s magnificent Lake Como estate must have been lost in the Italian mail (our schedule is still open George!)

But I’m pretty sure George’s place had some competition here. We scrambled down the hill into town just in time for sunset and a Nutella pancake wrap as we watched the ducks quacking and frolicking on the water and ferry boats pulling into the dock. We were onboard one the next morning as the sun shined and the air was a crisp 65 degrees. We pulled into Bellagio, the most famous of the Italian lakeside towns and wondered around the gardens, along the water and the village, eating lunch and gelato. We couldn’t believe the beauty here, everywhere you turned made a perfect photo op. I let my hair blow in the wind aboard the ferry boats as I gazed out over the mountain-lined lake and just let go. I could get used to this! It’s so easy to fall in love with Italy over and over again.

Milan

The next day we drove to Milan, which was like an adrenaline shot by comparison to the lake – fast-moving, crowded streets, crazy traffic and a sidewalk runway with stylish Italiano fashionistas shopping like there’s no tomorrow. And you’ve just got to shop while you’re here. It’s designer capitol numero uno and fall fashions were in full swing. (See my previous blog report.) Total damage to my credit card: 2 sweater dresses, a faux fur hat, a pair of pin-striped knee-high socks, and I ogled over some black leather riding boots that I decided to wait on and get in the States because the Euros made it waaaay too expensive to get there.  Our day of sightseeing took us straight to the Duomo, a magnificent, ostentatious display of religious power-flexing that was gaudy and beautiful all at the same time. Made entirely of hand-carved marble, it took five hundred years to complete and all of our energy to make it up the several hundred steps to the top. We were rewarded with spectacular views of the city from dizzying heights.

We toured LaScala museum and watched a rehearsal in progress right on the stage of the gorgeous theatre. We walked through the Corso Venezia (fashion center of Milan) and looked at all the beautiful clothes by famous designers. I couldn’t stop staring at all the people we passed by. They all looked like they stepped right out of the fashion magazines. Boy that really sets the bar when you’re getting dressed to go out here! I especially enjoyed the edgy looks from the students hanging outside the fashion school Istituto di Moda Burgo. And I have to say I had my best pasta dinner of the trip at the Ristorante Romani a classic, elegant Milanese restaurant.

With that, we said goodbye to Italy and came back to reality, though I’m ready to plan my next trip there. Southern Italy, watch out!

Ciao!

Makeup by Video

I am a self-proclaimed girly girl and I LOVE cosmetics, the colors, the way they can enhance your skin and add to your wardrobe. I’ve worked as a copywriter for a cosmetics company (dream job!) and I love to try new products and looks. Recently I’ve been addicted to two makeup video blogs MakeupGeek.com and FashionFace.TV (aka Pixiwoo on YouTube.com) where I have learned new tricks in applying makeup and started keeping a list of lots of products to try out. (My poor credit card!) I’ve had fun completely updating my makeup and brush collection and highly recommend the tips from these ladies, they are professional makeup artists and they know what they’re doing.
