Oscar Fashions 2012: All There in Black & White

On Oscar night, Best Picture winner “The Artist” wasn’t the only thing in black ‘n’ white, the red carpet was flowing with gowns of high contrast – Angelina Jolie,  Rose Byrne and others came in fail-safe black, while Milla Jovovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, Octavia Spencer and one actress surprises in white.

See who came looking their best in black and white in my report for Yahoo!

See Angelina Jolie’s fabulous black gown and much talked about leggy poses:

Prima Donna: Bless This Mess

I was hanging out at the NoHo Arts Festival when I heard something that caught my attention over on the parking lot stage of the Federal Bar. As I walked closer, I saw the stage jumping with energy – skinny, shaggy-haired boys in drainpipe black jeans and black eyeliner. The big beats in the vein of Johnny Thunders and Bowie got my hips shakin’ and I pulled out my camera. This is Prima Donna and this is my kind of band.  Singer Kevin Preston is all rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob, a born frontman with bad boy sex appeal with full command of the stage.

The new album “Bless This Mess” was just released on Acetate Records on Feb. 15 and it’s chock-full of ruckus, anthemic, sax-stung, rock ‘n’ roll numbers that make ya want to drive faster, live faster. Produced by Chris Dugan (Green Day, Iggy Pop) and D. Sardy (Jet, Wolfmother, Oasis), it’s clearly a melodic progression from their more raw previous effort, “After Hours.”

While their albums will no doubt inject ya with a little bit of dirty attitude and make ya sing along with a Sid Vicious snarl, this band is a must-see live. They’re on tour tearing up Europe at the moment, they’ll be back in LA on April 27 at the Redwood. In the meantime, check out my pix from the NoHo Arts Festival Performance and their music video below:

Besame Cosmetics & the Book of “Classic Beauty”

Creating a retro look is not just about finding a great dress in your favorite vintage store, it’s also about having the right hair and makeup.  And that means studying up on styles of the past because they vary with each decade. Should your hair have finger waves, victory rolls or be teased up big? Should lips be red or neutral? And what about that eyebrow arch? Nobody has a better handle on historical looks than Bésame Cosmetics and that’s validated by the fact that most of the vintage stores in town carry the line.  From the packaging to the colors to the application, Bésame has been giving aspiring pinup girls an authentic retro experience since 2004. Each item is like a little piece of jewelry – lipsticks in ornate metal bullet casings (Red Velvet is my favorite!) and equally pretty refillable powder compacts.

So who better to write the book on makeup than Bésame founder Gabriela Hernandez? She recently released, “Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup,” a sleek, substantial  book that explores the varying definitions of what’s been considered “beautiful,” through the years, including the color palettes that defined different eras and some amazing contraptions such as the “Hollywood Lift” skin lift bands (1964) and the “Lip Stencil” (1938) that women have used to create a desired look.

I got a chance to speak with Gabriela when I went to her book signing at ReVamp Vintage. She told me it took a few years to put together this chronicle of cosmetics, that by the way, makes a fabulous coffee table conversation piece!  She pointed out how the little details were lovingly researched, such as the history of the mascara spiral brush applicator that was invented and patented in 1939 only to become a staple of the cosmetics industry in the late 1950s after the originator’s patent expired.

Gabriella was a joy to speak with, it’s clear how much she loves  makeup and creating authentic looks based on some serious research. So pickup up “Classic Beauty,” it’s a great read for those who love retro looks as well as professional cosmologists and makeup lovers in general.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go powder my nose,
Kastle

ReVamp Vintage: The Prohibition Collection

Atop Downtown LA’s historic gems, the Broadway Bar and Orpheum Theatre, there is a little workshop and showroom called ReVamp Vintage where they create clothing from the years 1910 – 1950. I stopped by there recently and got a look at their latest line, “The Prohibition Collection” featuring women’s and men’s designs from the year 1920, the year Prohibition took place.

Founder/designer Annamarie Von Firley, who, it must be said, knows her fashion details down the last stitch, gave me a tour of the new line that features men’s three-piece suits with high-waisted, flat front, narrow-legged pants, vests that end at the natural waistline and what she calls the “John Barrymore” shirt featuring a long pointed collar. The conservative silhouettes for women, which predate the flapper commonly connected with the ‘20s, feature coat smocks, belted or sashed blouses at the natural waistline and “dirndl skirts” – full gathered skirts with fitted bodices.

ReVamp prides itself in creating period perfect looks and Hollywood has taken notice. They’ve done wardrobe for a number of TV shows and films including “Big Love”, “True Blood” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011), and the wedding dress and bridesmaids in “Pan Am’s” premiere episode.

The Checkers, International Swingers: Rock!

I’m a rocker. When I feel excited, happy, angry, frustrated or I just want to drown out my noisy neighbors, I put in my earbuds and rock out. Music has always given me a boost from when I was a teenager and decided I want to move to Los Angeles to become a music journalist (I covered music and nightclubs for the Los Angeles Times for 5 years) to now. I have an entire wall of shelves dedicated to my massive music collection including vinyl, CDs and books. I refuse to give it up in favor of much more compact digital versions. (Yes, moving is hell!) Though I don’t hit the clubs every night like I used to, I still get out for a good show once in a while. Below are some photos from a recent show with the Checkers and International Swingers that reunited me with some old friends and classic rock stars.

The Checkers

I feel like I’ve grown up with singer Julie Green, we’ve known each other so long. Her band is a savvy mix of cool girly pop, mod and new wave. She’s got a rad ‘60s style that I love but she can break you with some punk rawk attitude! Check out their CDs “Running with Scissors” and “Make a Move.”

The International Swingers

Talk about all stars! Featuring former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, Blondie’s Clem Burke, Gene Loves Jezebel/Generation X/The Alarm’s James Stevenson and 20 Flight Rockers’ Gary Twinn, this band blew the roof off lil’ ol’ Skinny’s bar in North Hollywood for a not-so-secret show before they headed out for an Australian tour. They performed hits from all of their previous bands and the crowd went absolutely ballistic, especially when they busted out a little Pistols’ anarchy. Yeah! Bring it!

See photos from the show here.

Rock on,
K.

Golden Globes Fashion Report 2012

This year’s Golden Globes had an outstanding lineup of nominees, and while the award winners are validated for their work, it is the red carpet where hours of dressing, hair and makeup talent are noticed. This year, there seemed be an abundance of reserved high necklines, some boringly conservative and some exceptionally stylish. Sexy is always in with those who go for risqué with an ultra-low cut, but it is the risk takers that grab the real attention – those who had a little personal touch or out of the ordinary detail when all others just strive to be perfect.

See the highs, the lows and the risk takers in my report on Yahoo!

Michelle Phan: Glamour Star

I love YouTube makeup videos. I’m so grateful to makeup artists who put these out because I’ve learned so many tips and tricks to create new looks for the seasons, for retro inspired outfits, and of course glamorous nights out. One of the most famous artists is Michelle Phan, who became such a web sensation with her makeup tutorials that she was hired by Lancôme Cosmetics to begin demonstrating ways to use their products. Now Michelle has launched her own limited-edition kit for Lancôme. The set is called Glamour Eyes and features the “Chic by Chelle” palette used to create three different looks Michelle designed herself – natural, diva and a smoldering eye look (Michelle’s personal favorite.) The kit also includes inky Artliner Precision Point EyeLiner and Hypnose Drama Instant Full Body Volume mascara.

And nothing promotes makeup like Michelle herself, so she went on the road like a makeup rock star to make appearances at Sephora, signing the kit and meeting fans that have only seen her on their computer screens.

What would have been an otherwise quiet Monday evening at Glendale’s Americana at Brand outdoor mall, was lit up with eager girls, clutching their newly purchased palettes that entitled them to a wristband for a signing. The line  eventually ran all the down to the back of the store as makeup fans waited patiently to  see their YouTube idol up close.

Michelle arrived to cheers from the crowd, her petite frame stylishly dressed in a light beige, softly scallop-textured dress and killer high heels (love ya for that!) and of course her hair and makeup were flawless! She sweetly greeted and hugged each fan, signed their kit, and sent them off with a smile to try their new look.

Bellejar Vintage: Going Out with Belles On

The New Year is upon us and what better time to shop for a new frock? I recently walked my stilettos over to Bellejar Vintage for their holiday party and it was a little piece of shopping heaven. Great pieces, great prices – even a $5 rack where my friend Fabby found the most fabulous tangerine-colored mod shift dress – which will put her right in fashion since tangerine tango was voted Pantone’s color of 2012. Bellejar frequently has little shopping parties with bands and we couldn’t help but the notice the good-looking crowd of shaggy-haired, alt-rock boys and gorgeous pin-up beauty queens that turned up. Owner Katie Stratton is one stylish dame herself and didn’t disappoint in a festive red-trimmed frock, pout and ruby sparkle shoes. Check the place out! Vanity Girl Hollywood: Interview with Maxine Tatlonghari

kastle7 150As any girly girl can attest, it’s fun to get dressed up and feel gorgeous. But for most women, the behind-the-scenes of getting ready is hardly diva worthy – steamy bathrooms, small mirrors, bad lighting. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the kind of big bulb vanities you see backstage at runway shows?  That’s what Vanity Girl Hollywood’s Maxine Tatlonghari, thought when she was at Burke Williams Spa for a pick-me-up pamper day after being laid off her job of 11 years. “I was getting ready in their vanity room and I just thought it was such a different experience to sit down and be well lit. It felt glamorous. Models and actresses get to feel like that all the time – why shouldn’t the everyday woman?”

Maxine decided to start her own business and founded Vanity Girl Hollywood in 2008 as a way of bringing a bit of Hollywood to the masses in the form of large scale mirrors lined with big bright bulbs that provide not just good, but flattering, lighting to do makeup by. They create an instant backstage style experience that brings a bold sweep of glamour to any room.

Vanity Girl Hollywood Broadway Makeup Desk

She admittedly started small, working with Versa Products Inc. a Los Angeles manufacturer she knew, who believed in what she was doing. She’s proud to say she keeps her production local with this company that also operates with green practices. She began utilizing the power of Facebook and Twitter and her background as a publicist and events director to get the word out. “There was a time when unless you had a rolodex of editor’s names, you couldn’t get a story out,” she says. “But now, if you have a sense of PR strategy, the social media tools allow you to get the word out quickly.”

She found out just how quickly when Vanity Girl Hollywood began working with celebrities and social media plugs from Kim Kardashian and YouTube makeup sensation Kandee Johnson sent Maxine’s business into the stratosphere.

Most recently, Maxine added events as part of her marketing plan, bringing out her vanities to create pop-up beauty bars at posh parties. She also brings along a posse of beauty experts such as makeup artist, Kenetia Lee and the Makeup Mandy “Lashers” to provide mini makeovers. Ladies line up, cocktails in hand, grooving to the music to get a quick beauty boost on the spot. “It’s part of the entertainment just as someone would have a bartender and a DJ,” she says.

At the recent party for the opening of Pure Barre in Beverly Hills, the Vanity Girl Hollywood Broadway Lighted Makeup Desk and Starlet Lighted Vanity Mirror dazzled the crowd. Maxine worked the room,  using her events background and party personality to connect everyone in attendance, especially other females who are pursuing their passions. Her efforts and her vanities seem to work to lift everyone up, to make everyone a star for the night. “I really want my friends to succeed and have great careers,” she says. “I had really great people help do that for me.”

Click to see a slideshow of the party

Her give-back also includes speaking engagements. She recently shared her experiences in growing her business with UCLA’s Social Media Marketing class to offer inspiration to aspiring online marketers.

For Maxine, business is really about making everything feel just a little more glamorous. She wants to show people the world is just one big red carpet runway and Vanity Girl Hollywood can help you get ready for it! — Kastle Waserman, Stiletto City
