Look of the Day: Vintage Spring Floral Print

k150_23SZDheel iconIt’s officially springtime and that means floral prints! For this Look of the Day, I pulled out one of my favorite vintage dresses. I love it for the unusual sides-wept neckline with delicate pleating. I paired it with some gold sandals. a pair of floral drop earrings I picked up on a trip to Paris, and a handbag I brought back from a visit to my parent’s house.

This bright yellow, vintage, basket-weave purse is one of my treasured possessions. My mom kept it in perfect condition and it makes me think of her and her fabulous sense of style whenever I carry it.

Smart Beauty and Fashion Finds for Earth Day

k150_23SZDEarth Day is coming on April 22 – what it’s time to think about being kind to this dear planet we live on. That means recycling more, contributing to landfills less. It also means thinking about some of our purchasing decisions, to reduce our carbon footprint and use only materials that are sustainable and/or recycled. I found a few great products from The Ultimate Green Store that are practical and stylish. Click the photo to shop*.

Ladies Comedy Night at Pinup Girl Clothing

k150_23SZDheel iconLadies’ Night Out in Magnolia Park is always a great place to be, with discounts at all the stores along a shopping district in Burbank that features unique boutiques and vintage / retro reproduction women’s clothing. Plus, food trucks with every kind of delicacy you can imagine line the street.

But one of my favorite places to go is always Pinup Girl Clothing and they turn Ladies’ Night Out into a true event, one well worth dressing up for in their fabulous bombshell fashions. Every month they feature either a cosmetic launch party, pinup makeup demos or bands playing. On a recent night, they had a full evening of female comediennes.

Because I can always use a good laugh, I went and took a seat in their backroom set up like a mini comedy club with a bar and small stage. Every lady to took the microphone was hilarious, not a dude in the mix with jokes mostly about dating and relationships and diets going wrong. And it’s always funny to hear them talk about how beautiful the crowd is because most regular attendees at PUG events come dressed in their pinup best and the ladies who work there are all the store’s own supermodels. It is land of the glamazons indeed!

Get the Look: 70s Disco Fashion

k150_23SZDheel iconOur partying ‘70s throw-back guest blogger Disco K. is the subject of this week’s Get the Look with her authentic ‘70s fashions of disco clubbin’ evening wear. While she’s no stranger to partying until the sun comes up and wearing her nighttime outfit during the day, we highly recommend it for a night of dancing.

The look has recently been rediscovered after being featured in the film, “American Hustle.” To get the look, check vintage stores and eBay for items from the 1970s. Dresses should be slinky and body-hugging with halter top or spaghetti strap detailing or the classic wrap-dress silhouette. Jewelry consists of long, drop charm necklaces, dangle hoop earrings and metal bangles. Throw on a fur stole, some platform heels, and a clutch to carry your compact, cigarettes and enough cash for a cocktail and cab ride home.

k150_23SZDheel iconViva Las Vegas, the biggest 4-day rockabilly concert party of the year is coming up in just a couple of weeks. It’s time to get your rockabilly on and have a rip roaring Easter weekend. I had a blast last year seeing Little Richard perform. Check out my report.

And the best part is the fashions! People come from around the world and bust out their best looks for this weekend. Last year I saw lots of colored retro hairdos in fun colors of purple, pink and blue, some fabulous dresses, and of course shoes to die for. Here are some suggestions* to get yourself a look to take with you. And don’t forget, there is plenty of shopping to be done there as well!

I love ModCloth’s Style Gallery – it’s so inspiring to see how people show their personal style – and I’ve discovered some really great blogs and fashion entrepreneur sites because most of the Style Gallery photos include a link to the person’s personal website. There are some really creative people on there! Plus, ModCloth adds links to items on their site that are similar to the outfits pictured, which makes me want to shop, shop, shop from ModCloth’s great selection of retro-inspired women’s fashions.  Brilliant! Here are a couple of my Style Gallery favorites:

FIDM Exhibit of Film Costume Design: Disco K. Reports

k150_23SZDheel iconIf you’re anything like me, you fall in love with the costumes in many of the films you see. Heck, I often go see movies, especially period films, just to see the clothes! The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise (FIDM) offers an annual exhibit of the costumes of some of the biggest films of the year so movie and fashion buffs can see them up close.

This year’s exhibit features the wardrobe from “Man of Steel”, “The Great Gatsby” (loved!), “Saving Mr. Banks” “Anna Karenina” and many more. The exhibit is an eye-ful of gorgeousness and if you want to get an idea of the sizes of some of the actors, know that none of the costumes were altered in any way. Instead, each mannequin was cut to fit the clothes. I especially enjoyed the paper hairdo’s that went along with them!

“American Hustle” costumes by designer Michael Wilkinson

We sent Disco K. to check out the clothes from “American Hustle” (though we did worry she’d try to take some of them home!) The clothing is a picture-perfect example of the sexy fashions of the ‘70s disco era – slinky dresses, wrap dresses, long necklaces,  men’s velvet suits and ascots. Here’s her report:

And here’s a sampling of some of the exhibit:

Look of the Day: Spring Floral

k150_23SZDheel iconSpring has officially sprung! On this first day of spring< I bring you a look as fresh as the first flower bloom. This vintage, ‘60s era dress with fun fringe trim is the perfect dress for a stroll through the park on a warm spring day or shimmying the night away at a local mod club.

In my never ending hunt for vintage treasures, I found a match pink shoe and purse set made of vinyl with adorable flower accent on each shoe. A pair of cat-eye sunglasses and silver drop ball earrings I picked up during a vacation in Rome complete the look.
