Stylish Work Wardrobe

Kastle Waserman Stiletto Cityheel iconI just landed a new job as Social Media Manager for a large corporation, and with that comes a whole new occasion to dress for. Unlike the casual culture of my past two jobs, my new job is more traditional business casual. But that doesn’t mean dressing boring, at least not to me.

While my Ramones t-shirt may not work for this job, I’ve been thinking about what I can do to let my funky leanings and passion for vintage peek through to show my personality. Plus, it’s a good excuse to go shopping and add some new pieces to my wardrobe that can also be worn outside the office.

A Unique Blazer

I like jackets that have a unique cut, bold color or interesting print. I also love short tuxedo jackets for their tailored fit and slim lapels. Classic black blazers let my inner Chrissie Hynde come out.

Unique Blazer Striped Blazer

Tops and Skirts

I love wearing a rock ‘n’ roll t-shirt with a blazer but I don’t think it will fly at my new office. So I’ve been on the hunt for tops with fun prints – polka dots, stripes, houndstooth, florals, leopard — to add some texture to my layers. For skirts, nothing looks more polished than the timeless pencil skirt, hello Joan from “Mad Men”!

Houndstooth T-shirt Red Pencil Skirt

Shift Dresses

I love a good shift dress. One piece, zip and you’re done. Plus you can dress them up for nighttime wear. I look for bold, solid colors and fun prints. Also, don’t be afraid to layer and add texture. A striped jacket with a floral print can add an interesting twist.

Stylish Shoes

Work shoes for me have to be comfortable. I save my sky-high stilettos for night’s out – I just can’t be in them for the long nine hours of a workday. I also look for shoes that are easy to slip on – fancy buckles are out because I’m usually racing out the door to get to work on time. But shoes are a great place to sneak in your funky style and for me, finding shoes that also go well with my vintage wardrobe is also a plus, like these from Modcloth by Bait Footwear:

Statement Accessories

Accessories are really where you can let you personality shine. Lately I’ve been obsessing on statement necklaces. When the trend first started I didn’t pay much attention to them and thought they were too garish. But then I found one I liked and I became addicted. Now I have several in different colors and styles. I’m also loving chiffon scarves at the moment. They add a pop color and style to any outfit.

Look of the Day: Vintage Little Black Dress

k150_23SZDheel iconThe little black dress is a staple of any woman’s wardrobe. If you keep it simple, it’s the one women’s fashion item that can be dressed up or down and is perfect for any occasion. When you find one that’s vintage, it makes it all the more special. Today’s Look of the Day features a dress I found at a Hollywood costume rummage sale – an annual frenzy of shopping treasures put on by Western Costume Company in the San Fernando Valley. I added some vintage reproduction touches including a leopard-print purse, a rhinestone and pearl brooch, pearl drop earrings, pinup heels from Pinup Girl Clothing, plus, a victory-roll hair do and red lips.

1960’s Ye-Ye Fashion Show and Wine Tasting

k150_23SZDNothing is more groovy than stepping back into the era of 1960’s French Yé-Yé. Clever Vintage Clothing and LA Wine Tasting joined forces at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset Blvd. to create a evening of French ‘60s style revelry with an exquisite selection of wines, a vintage fashion show and a performance by the band Paris Loves LA, featuring French expat singer Adele Jacques.

For a little history, French Yé-Yé came about when French singers like Brigitte Bardot  tried to perform American pop songs but didn’t know the words in English so they sang, “Ye, Ye…,” which made them sound utterly charming and of course they were always stylishly dressed.

brights2.SZD

For the fashion show, Clever Vintage curators Dave and Sabino brought in a goldmine of ‘60s deadstock (never been worn) ‘60s outfits in perfect condition after recently buying up the inventory of a department store that had been closed and untouched since 1968.  Bright colors and bold patterns ruled these knitwear sets.

collage1We felt like our own little gang of ‘60s girls. After walking our runway around the pool, the band started up and we couldn’t help but dance to their infectious sounds, in fact, we even jumped up on stage with them and became their go-go dancers!

For our grand finale, three of the models showed a vintage swimwear collection and really made a splash by jumping in the pool! But much to everyone’s delight, the biggest surprise was Clever founder Dave Temple jumping in with them – clothes and all!

It was a fun, wild night, much like they had in the ‘60s I’m sure. Many thanks to Clever Vintage Clothing for letting me be a part of it.

Swing it,

Look of the Day: Vintage on Main Street

k150_23SZDheel iconFor this Look of the Day I went shopping along Main Street, deep on the West Side of Los Angeles.  I love all the shops along there, there’s always something new to discover and there are lots of great shops to pick up a little gift for someone special.

I decided to wear one of my favorite vintage dresses, a ‘60s chiffon shift dress with a bright citrus print and matching fabric belt. I love this dress but unfortunately, the delicate fabric is giving way to time and it’s starting to disintegrate a little bit, despite my best efforts to preserve it. I figured I’d get it in a photo shoot before it turns to dust!

Vintage_MainS11SZD

The purse is a vintage, wicker, box bag that belonged to my mom. I’m lucky that it’s in perfect condition and I cherish it. The rhinestone clip-on earrings came from a local vintage store and the leopard sunglasses I actually picked up at a party store. You never know where you’re going to find something to add a spark to your wardrobe!

Vintage_MainSt4SZD

Vintage_MainSt2SZD

The shoes are technically costume shoes. The plastic isn’t terribly comfortable but if you don’t have to walk around much, they go with any outfit!

While the dress is ‘60s, I topped it with a hairdo of ‘40s-era victory rolls. Don’t be afraid to mix up your vintage eras and also throw in some modern pieces. For my shopping day I was just going for a fun look, but if I was going for an authentic look in the era of the dress, I might have done my hair in a beehive or Brigitte Bardot style. 1930s Vintage Glamour Day

k150_23SZDheel iconImagine stepping back in time to the 1930s – what would your hair look like, your makeup, your wardrobe? I got to find out and do my own modern spin on between-the-wars glamour for the “1930s Vintage Glamour Day: Makeup, Fashion & Film” at the Egyptian Theatre.

The action-packed day started with 1930s makeup makeovers at a station for Bésame Cosmetics, a brand know for their beautiful vintage-recreation cosmetics. And if you wondered what some of the packaging of actual cosmetics items from the ‘30s looked like, Joan Renner of The Vintage Powder Room had an impressive display of makeup and hair styling accessories.

makeovers2SZD sandraDHairSZD
vintagePowderRoomSZD vintagePowerRoom2SZD

Over at the hair station, stylist Sandra D. was showing a crowd of lovely ladies how to do a pin-curl set. The event made for plenty of  great people watching opportunities while shopping from Papermoon Vintage, and photo-taking ops, including the one here with me and the gang from the Art Deco Society, including Margot Gerber (right) who co-produced the day’s events. I did my best ’30s era look with side-pinned, curly hair, green eyeshadow and drop-waistband dress. Oh and in case you were in need of a refreshment, you could grab an old fashioned ice cream soda from C.K.Farnsworth!

artDecoGroupSZD

CKFarnsworthIceCream

The main events included a presentation on beauty trends and makeup products available in the 1930s by Gabriela A. Hernandez, CEO of Bésame Cosmetics and author of Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup. Think Max Factor Pan-Cake makeup and greasepaint ladies! Our cosmetics have come a long way! It was especially fascinating to hear of the makeup techniques that had to be used for film to compensate for the ultra bright lighting that was used – some so strong it even gave some actress permanent eye damage!

fashionShow11SZD

The presentation was followed by a fashion show of 1930s era fashions, flowing with long party frocks, fur stoles and delicate materials. We were surprised to learn each exquisite outfit was owned by the model who wore them and ever-dapper MC Nathan Smythe added to the fashion celebration with his playful commentary.

The fashion show was followed by a film screening of “VOGUES OF 1938,” a rarely seen Oscar-nominated, Technicolor film starring  Warner Baxter and Joan Bennett that tells the story of a successful fashion designer, who’s life is turned upside down by a runaway bride who comes to him looking for a job, and possibly romance.

wayWeWoreSZD

Following the film was a book signing in the lobby by 1930s-era actress Marsha Hunt with her book, “The Way We Wore: Styles of the 1930s and ’40s and Our World Since Then.” At age 96 Hunt looked beautiful and elegant and every bit the movie star – what an inspiration!

Be sure to look for more vintage events coming up at the Egyptian Theatre including Saturday, June 14 with presentation by Clever Vintage Clothing on Working Women’s Vintage Fashion followed by a screening of “The Best of Everything.”

Vintage style is where it’s at,
