Trip Report: Lake Tahoe

k150_24Stiletto_City_heel_iconSZDEvery fall, as the summers linger in Los Angeles and the heat overstays its welcome, I get antsy to leave town and head for some cool, crisp weather. This year, I was particularly anxious to see the leaves put on their lush, colorful displays of golds and reds, which is just pure poetry to me.

We decided to head for Lake Tahoe, a place my parents always spoke fondly of because they went several times to celebrate special occasions, “You have to take the full drive around the lake” they told me.

Lake Tahoe

So we packed up and headed for Nevada. First stop Reno, affectionately known as the “biggest little city in the world,” which combines the quaint charm of small town life down the Truckee river, where we strolled down the river walk and stopped for a tasty lunch at the Wild River Grill. Then we did a quick exploration of the casino district which looked like it hadn’t changed since the Rat Pack ruled here. I love the vintage vibe but it also felt just a tad tawdry.

Reno, Nevada

Then a drive through Carson City brought us to higher elevations where we saw the gorgeous blue of the lake peek through the trees of Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe

The weather hovered around 60 degrees and we arrived in time for sunset and a few pictures before the temperatures dropped into the 30’s. Then we checked into the Zephyr Cove Resort, a rustic inn with a cabin-like feel. What we loved most about it was the cozy dining room of the restaurant, warmed by a big fireplace and a large bar. Decaf Irish coffees by the fire became my nightcap of choice for the weekend.

Lake Tahoe

We woke to perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky. We went shopping in Heavenly Village, a ski resort where a cluster of shops and cafes bustled, though at this time of year it was slow as they prepared for the onslaught of ski season. While they waited for snow, I was happy with having the place to ourselves and seeing the golds and reds of the trees in their fall colors. But I did need some warm clothes. Being an LA girl for the past many years, I am terrible at dressing for cold weather.

Heavenly Village, Lake Tahoe

So we stopped in Patagonia. I’ve always liked this brand because of their constant efforts in corporate responsibility and environmentalism (read about it here). Many of their clothes are made from recycled materials through their Common Threads program, and they work to ensure animal welfare by using Traceable Down from geese that are never plucked or force-fed.

I met Patagonia salesman, Tim, who educated me on how the layers work, starting with a light base layer, a warmer layer, a jacket and then a shell to protect from wind and rain. Since I wasn’t heading to the Arctic anytime soon, I opted for the first couple of layers with a Capeline 2 shirt in black and a Fleece Jacket in white that’s so soft and fluffy I felt like a little snow bunny the minute I put it on!

Shopping Patagonia

It was the perfect thing to wear as we headed out on a couple of hikes, first to Page Meadow where we hiked along the peaceful river and met some friendly people with super cute dogs along the way.

Page Meadow Lake Tahoe

Later, we stopped at Spooner Lake, a truly peaceful spot where you can really take a moment to breathe and be inspired.

Spooner Lake Tahoe

As my parents advised, we took a full day to drive around Lake Tahoe to take in its beauty from all angles. We were left breathless when we came across Emerald Bay and postcard perfect picture of nature’s full glory.

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

And we stopped for a bite to eat at Rosie’ Café in Tahoe City where lots of interesting vintage items dangle from the ceiling and our window seat had a fabulous view of the lake with our tasty quiche and salad.

Rosie's Cafe Tahoe City

Our 2 ½ days in Tahoe was just enough to explore the area and take a break from the city. It’s wonderful to get out in nature where the craziness of life seems to float away and you literally stop and smell the flowers. While we were lucky enough to see a group of deer cross in front of our car, we never saw any bears, though we heard about a bear called “One Eye” that hung around our hotel. It’s just as well because there were plenty of warnings to be careful about getting near them or leaving food in the car, especially now that they are trying to deter people from taking selfies with them. Hello! Can you say dangerous!

Deer crossing Nevada

But I did leave with a camera card of memories and a smile on my face. Thank you Lake Tahoe!

Until the next adventure,

Goodbye Drew Bernstein of Lip Service Clothing

k150_24heel iconThe club scene in the late ‘80s and through the ‘90s in Hollywood was the stuff rock ‘n’ roll history is made of. Clubs from Scream to Cathouse to Pretty Ugly set the stage for bands that became local legends and world famous – Guns N’ Roses to name one you may know. It was a playground for the wild ones, the misfits and weirdos who loved to rock. Punk, goth and glam metal all collided. We were a rock ‘n’ roll movement. We dressed to the hilt, went out every night, all knew each other, rocked to bands until the wee hours and I don’t remember sleeping much!

Drew Bernstein
Drew Bernstein

During it all, one scenester among us saw the calling to make clothes that embodied the energy we all felt and how we wanted to represent. Drew Bernstein founded the fashion line Lip Service in the late ‘80s with the simple desire to make cool stuff for cool people.

Tops made of fishnet, black leggings with white dagger silkscreened patterns, sexy vinyl dresses, bondage pants and those “Stretch F*ckin’ Jeans” that every band member soon came to wear. He clothes were all over the clubs and soon all over MTV and all over the world. He would later go on to start the Kill City fashion line and rebranded his fashion empire under the name The Original Cult.

Last week we got the news that Drew Bernstein, at age 51, had passed away, by his own hand. The ripple of grief could be felt deep in our hearts as word spread across the web, on Facebook, and in publications including the LA Weekly and LA Times. One of us had fallen. I think we all found it hard to believe. Though many of us have left the club scene and gone on to start families, get “real jobs” and for lack of a better term, “grown up,” inside we still feel, wild, cool and invincible. So it’s unimaginable when one of us leaves us, and particularly difficult to grasp when it was his own choice.

Street Walkin' Cheetah All Stars
Street Walkin’ Cheetah All Stars

So it was only fitting to have one last rockin’ night in Drew’s honor. A night was quickly organized by scenester and former Lip Service employee, Jeffrey Damnit and a slew of bands jumped on board. The night turned into less of a memorial but more of a celebration of Drew, the music that inspired him, and a reunion of friends who hadn’t seen each other in 10, (gasp) even 20 years!

Vylette and Johnny Indovina

Up on stage, the bands rocked hard as ever with some of that familiar, dirty rock ‘n’ roll Hollywood is known for. On the bill was Vylette, Johnny Indovina, Jason Charles Miller of Godhead, The Atoms, The Street Walkin’ Cheetah All Stars, Junkyard, Casper and the Bad Spirits and GNR tribute band, Hollywood Roses. Between sets, DJs Lina Lecaro and Michael Stewart spun a great mix of glam, rock and punk.

And as we all walked through the crowd, scanning faces with a “I remember you” look until the names registered in our memory and giving full-body bear hugs part in comfort for our loss and in joy of reunion, I swear for one second I thought I saw Drew in the crowd, bouncing through, giving pats on the back and hugs with his energetic swagger like he always did.

reedJeffrey
Jeffrey Damnit and Reed Bernstein

At one point during the night, Drew’s brother Reed took the stage and thanked everyone for coming. He, along with many bands on stage, spoke of how we are all family. We’ve all shared in some amazing times in the clubs together, times other people could only dream they could have been a part of. But just as life gives us good times, it will gives us bad and we have to look out for each other. Suicide has been a popular point of discussion in the media recently with the passing of Robin Williams but Drew’s death really brought it home for many of us. The moral of the night, if you think someone is in trouble, reach out to them.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Drew back in 2002 about his fashion line and I thought I would share a few quotes on his design evolution:

“I came to LA from San Francisco and I was jobless. My friend at Ape Leather asked me if I wanted to try selling belts around the Bay Area. I didn’t know what I was doing. I just took some catalogs and went marching down Haight Street. I ended up selling about $800 worth of belts in one day. That was the most money I’d ever made. Turned out I was a pretty good salesmen!”

“I used to make T-shirts for my band but I wanted to try doing leggings with a print silkscreened on them. My friend asked me what I would put on them. I had a little dagger necklace on and I just said, ‘Oh, something like this.’” I had them made and sold a batch to Retail Slut on Melrose. The next day they were sold out!”

See Lip Service Dagger Leggings

“I had a box of old and damaged clothes and I told Izzy [Guns N’ Roses] he could have anything he wanted. He grabs this jacket that had “WAR” silkscreened all over it and he says, “WAR, W. Axl Rose! I’m gonna get this for Axl!’ So Axl starts wearing it and next thing you know the cash registers are ringing! It went international!”

See Axl in the WAR jacket

“In the punk days, everyone wore tight black jeans. The materials then didn’t have stretch in them so you’d alter them so they were tapered and pegged. After doing the leggings, everyone wanted stretch jeans because they were seeing it in England but I couldn’t find the stretch material. People kept bugging me for them and I finally found the fabric and I was like, ‘here’s your stretch, f*ckin’ jeans!’ So that’s what I called them, ‘Stretch F*ckin’ Jeans!’”

RIP Drew.

BeautyCon LA 2014

k150_24heel iconBeautyCon rolled through Los Angeles for the second year. I had high hopes for this conference after last year’s debut drew such a crowd that me and hundreds of other beauty enthusiasts were met with an overcapacity mob scene and there was no getting in. After moving the event to a – somewhat – larger venue, I hoped for a little more organization to handle the massive crowd who shows up to see mega Beauty YouTubers including Kandee Johnson, Bethany Mota, Meg DeAngelis, Gigi Gorgeous.

BeautyConLA 2014

The minute the elevators doors opened to the 2nd floor of the LA Mart, you could hear the volume of hundreds of excited beauty fans. I stepped into the scene and it was instant insanity. Girls were already pushing through the too-narrow isles with giant shopping bags and lines wrapped throughout the venue to try to get in to the see the panel discussions. It was a beauty zoo! And while it was fun to be among my fellow beauty lovers, I found the setup to be exasperating. I could barely see what beauty vendors including CoverGirl, NYX, and tarte had to offer. It looked like the majority of the booths were offering quickie makeovers (which you had to wait in line for) and had very little product on display.

BeautyConLA 2014

The demographic in attendance was very young, we’re talking tweens and teens, many there with their moms to see their beloved Beauty Vlogger. Let’s just say the running, pushing and screaming got a little trying. Perhaps I’m not the target audience here but I was also there to see some of the vloggers I’ve admired and while I had a VIP pass, there was no getting near any of their appearances without fighting mob scenes and lines. No thanks, I’ll stick to watching them on YouTube in the comfort of my home.

BeautyConLA 2014

But it did say a lot about the draw and influence of these new self-made stars. They are the new celebrities. But just a note to BeautyCon – get a bigger venue, these YouTubers have millions of fans who subscribe to their channels and are going to show up to see them in person. Do the math. Remember BeatleMania? This is BeautyMania!

Stay beautiful,

“Please Kill Me” Reading at Lethal Amounts Gallery

k150_21heel iconAs the 20th anniversary approaches for one of the defining books on the punk era, “Please Kill Me,” it was only appropriate that a reading be held at the Lethal Amounts Gallery, surrounded by an exhibit of photos of Joey Ramone, Wayne Jayne County, Johnny Thunders and others who made the New York City ‘70s scene a milestone in rock ‘n’ roll history.

On hand were authors Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil to read from their oral history, which came together from hundreds of interviews with key scenesters and musicians.

Though the summer heat had the gallery steaming, and Legs was running late (really late), it didn’t sway the crowd of young and old punk fans from sticking around. Photographer Paul Zone introduced the reading and his exhibit – a majority of the photos taken when he was between the ages of 14-16 and running around clubs CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. (Man, I wish I was that cool at 14!) Zone also has his own book now available, “Playground: Growing Up in the New York Underground.”

Gillian and Legs then took the mic and traded off parts reading first from their most recent book, “Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose,” an edited diary of a teenage girl who struggles with addiction and bullying.

For the readings from “Please Kill Me,” they then called up old pal Howie Pyro to read a few pages about the death of Sid Vicious. They then wanted to find Howie’s part in the book when he was mistaken for Johnny Thunders, but since they all had different prints of the book with different page numbers, they gave up and just had Howie tell the story from memory – which ended up being even funnier than the book version!

If you haven’t read “Please Kill Me,” you can’t claim to know your rock history. Get it now. And pick up Paul Zone’s book while you’re at it. Click the images to buy ’em*.

1930s Vintage Glamour Day

k150_23SZDheel iconImagine stepping back in time to the 1930s – what would your hair look like, your makeup, your wardrobe? I got to find out and do my own modern spin on between-the-wars glamour for the “1930s Vintage Glamour Day: Makeup, Fashion & Film” at the Egyptian Theatre.

The action-packed day started with 1930s makeup makeovers at a station for Bésame Cosmetics, a brand know for their beautiful vintage-recreation cosmetics. And if you wondered what some of the packaging of actual cosmetics items from the ‘30s looked like, Joan Renner of The Vintage Powder Room had an impressive display of makeup and hair styling accessories.

makeovers2SZD sandraDHairSZD
vintagePowderRoomSZD vintagePowerRoom2SZD

Over at the hair station, stylist Sandra D. was showing a crowd of lovely ladies how to do a pin-curl set. The event made for plenty of  great people watching opportunities while shopping from Papermoon Vintage, and photo-taking ops, including the one here with me and the gang from the Art Deco Society, including Margot Gerber (right) who co-produced the day’s events. I did my best ’30s era look with side-pinned, curly hair, green eyeshadow and drop-waistband dress. Oh and in case you were in need of a refreshment, you could grab an old fashioned ice cream soda from C.K.Farnsworth!

artDecoGroupSZD

CKFarnsworthIceCream

The main events included a presentation on beauty trends and makeup products available in the 1930s by Gabriela A. Hernandez, CEO of Bésame Cosmetics and author of Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup. Think Max Factor Pan-Cake makeup and greasepaint ladies! Our cosmetics have come a long way! It was especially fascinating to hear of the makeup techniques that had to be used for film to compensate for the ultra bright lighting that was used – some so strong it even gave some actress permanent eye damage!

fashionShow11SZD

The presentation was followed by a fashion show of 1930s era fashions, flowing with long party frocks, fur stoles and delicate materials. We were surprised to learn each exquisite outfit was owned by the model who wore them and ever-dapper MC Nathan Smythe added to the fashion celebration with his playful commentary.

The fashion show was followed by a film screening of “VOGUES OF 1938,” a rarely seen Oscar-nominated, Technicolor film starring  Warner Baxter and Joan Bennett that tells the story of a successful fashion designer, who’s life is turned upside down by a runaway bride who comes to him looking for a job, and possibly romance.

wayWeWoreSZD

Following the film was a book signing in the lobby by 1930s-era actress Marsha Hunt with her book, “The Way We Wore: Styles of the 1930s and ’40s and Our World Since Then.” At age 96 Hunt looked beautiful and elegant and every bit the movie star – what an inspiration!

Be sure to look for more vintage events coming up at the Egyptian Theatre including Saturday, June 14 with presentation by Clever Vintage Clothing on Working Women’s Vintage Fashion followed by a screening of “The Best of Everything.”

Vintage style is where it’s at,

A Fond Farewell to Kate Mantilini Restaurant

k150_23SZDheel iconIn the many years I’ve lived in Los Angeles, I’ve seen a lot of beloved places come and go, but one that makes me exceptionally sad is the closing of Kate Mantilini restaurant in Beverly Hills. This spacious eatery is home to a generous menu with lots of healthy options, huge portions and great taste. Plus, it is one of the few, if not the only, nice restaurant that serves late, which has been a perfect spot to hit after a night on the town.

Late actor Harry Lewis and wife Marilyn opened Kate Mantilini in the 1980s after first opening Hamburger Hamlet on the Sunset Strip in 1950, (another long gone beloved restaurant.) The Lewis’ sons Adam and David took over the business in 2009, with Adam as the CEO and David as executive chef.

dress1

The restaurant has been a favorite of celebrities and the stylish set. The place is set up for people watching with a large open space and big wooden booths that rim the giant windows. It’s almost like a walking a runway being seated by the host as you pass by an audience of tables and patrons at the bar. Because of the late night hours, many like me, came after a night out, dressed in their finest evening clothes.

I’ve lost count of how many famous people we’ve spotted at Kate’s and nobody bothers them. We all know we’re just there for the great food and stellar staff. Speaking of which, one of the things I’ll miss most is our favorite waiter, Robert, a guy who looks like a character actor himself but took pride in being one the best, and friendliest, waiters in town. We always asked for a table in his section and he treated us great.

wRobert

For one of my last nights there, I wore one of my favorite vintage dresses, a gauzy floral print dress from the late ‘50s/early ‘60s that features a cape-like drape in the back. After all, this is a place to see and be seen!

And just who was Kate Mantilini, whom the restaurant is named after? Supposedly she was quite an independent spirit and had a romantic affair with owner Marilyn’s uncle. She dabbled in boxing promotion and was an early female entrepreneur in the 1940s, which captured Marilyn’s imagination. While the family wasn’t thrilled that a mistress became the namesake of the family business, the story has now become part of restaurant history.

Kate Mantilini Beverly Hills will close on June 14. Catch it while you can.

Thanks for the memories,

Ladies Comedy Night at Pinup Girl Clothing

k150_23SZDheel iconLadies’ Night Out in Magnolia Park is always a great place to be, with discounts at all the stores along a shopping district in Burbank that features unique boutiques and vintage / retro reproduction women’s clothing. Plus, food trucks with every kind of delicacy you can imagine line the street.

But one of my favorite places to go is always Pinup Girl Clothing and they turn Ladies’ Night Out into a true event, one well worth dressing up for in their fabulous bombshell fashions. Every month they feature either a cosmetic launch party, pinup makeup demos or bands playing. On a recent night, they had a full evening of female comediennes.

Brandie Posey

Because I can always use a good laugh, I went and took a seat in their backroom set up like a mini comedy club with a bar and small stage. Every lady to took the microphone was hilarious, not a dude in the mix with jokes mostly about dating and relationships and diets going wrong. And it’s always funny to hear them talk about how beautiful the crowd is because most regular attendees at PUG events come dressed in their pinup best and the ladies who work there are all the store’s own supermodels. It is land of the glamazons indeed!

Oscars 2014

k150_23SZDheel iconThe Oscars is always a good excuse for a party. I was lucky to be invited to watch the big show on a big screen at the annual private party at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, right across the street from the real action on the red carpet at the Dolby Theater. This year’s party was a little more toned down than more dressed-up year’s past, but I couldn’t resist pulling out a gold-toned vintage dress, cocktail-length to keep it casual. I spent the evening with my pals Dave and Sabino of Clever Vintage to review the best fashion moments, and my friend and host for the evening, Margot, who handles marketing for the Egyptian.

wCleverSZD

wMargotSZD

While my picks, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett were big winners, I was a little disappointed “American Hustle” was a complete shut out. (Disco K. was spotted throwing down her cigarette and headed for the bar!) But enough about the winners, what about the fashion? Here are my picks for best dressed.

bestDressed1

Lupita Nyong’o has been beautifully dressed all through awards season, this baby blue, Grecian-style dress was stunning. And I loved her simple gold earrings, headband and bracelet. Cate Blanchett is another star who is always elegantly dressed and I loved her ethereal, jewel-sprinkled dress. The one fashion don’t — her earrings — too big, the colors don’t match. I would have preferred some simple diamond studs to let the dress be the showpiece.

bestDressed2

I absolutely adored Jennifer Garner’s fringe-layered dress that shimmied when she walked like a graceful go-go dancer. And Kate Hudson was classic Hollywood gorgeous in a plunging, perfectly-tailored gown. Plus 10 points for knowing how to pose in it. Both were working the big trends of the night – metallic and nude color tones and side-swept hair.

partypicSZD

And as host Ellen Degeneres literally broke Twitter (yes, I was having trouble getting on the social site to send Tweets for a while) by having her selfie loaded with A-listers re-tweeted by millions, we couldn’t resist doing our own group selfie, which we all reposted, of course!

Another great Oscar party!

Stiletto City Goes To Austin!

k150_23SZDheel iconTravel is one of my favorite hobbies. This year I got to spend a little extra time with my family in Houston over the holidays and decided to make a side trip to Austin. This quirky city is the capitol of Texas and an active college town, home to the University of Texas. It’s also the location of the mega South by Southwest Music Festival every spring.

Upon my arrival at a hotel along the trendy, boutique and café-lined district of South Congress (or “SoCo” as the locals know it), I found Austin to be quite charming with its abundance of artsy buildings, trailer parks converted into eateries, and old homes converted into galleries and shops, and my favorite – lots of vintage shopping!

Austin2SZD

I did some shopping along SoCo (Disco K. will be very happy with her new pimpin’ vintage faux fur stole!) and went exploring Downtown where I ventured into the State Capitol building with its massive rotunda topped with a star that spells TEXAS at the top. I also checked out “The Drag” near UT, which now lives up to its name because most of the cool shops have been pushed out for chain-style restaurants. And a trip to Austin wouldn’t be complete without tasting some local music so I caught the new band Wrenfro featuring Tony Scalzo from Fastball at the Strange Brew Lounge.

Check out the scene:

Here’s a list of vintage stores I hit in case you’re ever in the area:

New Bohemia – 1606 S. Congress, 78704

Uncommon Objects – 1512 S. Congress Ave., 78704

St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store – 1327 S Congress Ave.,78704

Room Service – 107 E. North Loop Blvd. (E. 53rd), 78751

Bertha’s Paradise – 112 E. North Loop, 78751

Ermine Vintage – 106 E. North Loop Blvd., 78751

There were so many vintage stores, I didn’t have time (or the money!) to hit them all but here’s a map of Vintage Around Town if you do.

Thanks for a great time Austin!
