Halloween 2012: Party Photos!

With Halloween falling on a Wednesday this year, the partying began over the weekend. I got my masquerade on Friday night, dressing as a little devil for “Halloween Ladies Night Out” in Magnolia Park Burbank. The monthly shopping event got spooky with shop staff dressing in costume, serving up discounts and treats.

I met up with “Nurse Fabby” at the Pin Up Girl Clothing Boutique, where those ladies make dressing up a lifestyle. And they didn’t disappoint. PUG’s ever-gorgeous Micheline Pitt (who it’s impossible to take a bad picture of) was stunning as villainess Poison Ivy (see below). Other amazing costumes of the night included Breakfast at Tiffany’s Audrey Hepburn, who later won the costume contest at Audrey K. down the street. See the slideshow by clicking on the photo below:

Magnolia Park Halloween Slideshow

Saturday night I was out at a party thrown by Nathan and Nicole who I know through Nicole’s stunning photography work: Paper Moon Vintage Photography. Nathan’s amazing craftsman-style house in Highland Park was decorated to thrill, looking like a movie set for a classic horror flick and the various invited goblins who turned up fit right in. I went as a Goddess and my boyfriend as the Plague Doctor (see below.)  See the slideshow by clicking on the photo below:

Nail Art: How celebrities Katy Perry, Kesha and Jordin Sparks Got Their Look

Ever wonder how pop starlets such as Katy Perry, Kesha and Jordin Sparks come up with innovative nail art for their photo shoots and videos? I found their secret weapon, celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees.

I caught up with Kyees to speak with her about how she came up with artistic looks for some recent music videos and what it’s like to be a manicurist in midst of an army of stylists and quick wardrobe changes.

Check out some of her work below and read how she did it HERE.

Falling for Fall: Leaf Peeping

I love fall. It’s my favorite season – the weather turns cool, the leaves change to a bonfire of colors and drift from the trees to give me the delight of crunching under my feet like potato chips. I get to bundle in groovy jackets, stylish scarves and boots, and I just have more energy to go out and be adventurous.

I recently got to escape the relentless 90 degree weather of LA’s late summer go to to Eastern Europe where the weather was in the 40s-60s and I couldn’t have been happier, especially when we stumbled upon a gorgeous park in Warsaw Poland covered with a blanket of orange leaves gently touched by perfect sunlight. I just had to stop and play!

Read about my adventures in leaf peeping last year in Vermont in the interior design blog I contribute to HERE and on the Lomography site HERE.

(Look for a full report on my recent travels to Warsaw, Budapest and Amsterdam coming soon!)

Hooray for fall!

The Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en: I’ll Drink to That!

When I was at Tiki Oasis, I picked up a postcard for a YouTube show called The Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en. I loved the name and the look of the card so I decided to check it out. What I found were little campy clips basically showing how a good cocktail and retro party dish (think Spam and Jello) can help make any of life’s mundane tasks a bit more festive – after all, we gotta clean the house, do taxes, entertain unexpected guests and so on. I loved the clips so much I watched every single one of them and they made me laugh out loud more times than I could count – and I learned some great drink recipes along the way! I especially love the host’s ‘60s-era outfits and the ever-changing memorabilia in the backdrop. Check out the latest on how to survive election season:

The Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en was created by actress/writer Kelly Camille Patterson and  video producer Paul Spencer.  So sit back and enjoy their most recent video and more on their YouTube Channel HERE.

Who Shot Rock & Roll: Rock Photography Exhibit

Rod Stewart once sang, “every picture tells a story” and he wasn’t kidding. If you haven’t gotten around to the “Who Shot Rock & Roll” exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography, I urge you do so before it closes on October 21st. I went a couple of times, for the exhibit and for the lecture series. I took the audio tour and got to hear the photographers tell amazing stories behind photos of The Clash, the Ramones, John Lennon and others. It was so great to get a look a music legends from the past that I’ve missed and those that have inspired me from my childhood to today.

The Thursday night lectures have been total sell-outs and it makes for a mesmerizing evening of hearing the first-hand stories of how photographers such as Ed Colver, Bob Gruen, Roberta Bayley and Ebet Roberts got their famous shots – it’s not all fun and glamour – oh the stories they can tell! If you missed some of the lectures and can’t make it to the remaining ones, luckily, you can check out the recordings on the website HERE.

But if you’re a fan of rock ‘n’ roll and photography, this is one show you won’t want to miss – so get out there.

Long live rock!

Social Media Week: Style and Substance

Social media week took place across the globe last week with an action-packed schedule of seminars, parties and networking galore. In Los Angeles, social media went Hollywood with a majority of the events taking place at io/LA Collaborative Work Space and the Egyptian Theatre along Hollywood Boulevard. I attended several of the seminars throughout the week, including one out in the Venice offices for Google.

It was so great to share experiences and meet people who are as excited about this industry as I am. I was inspired in hearing about campaigns and new things that can be done in this fast-paced, ever-changing medium for communication. Most everyone was young (or young at heart), enthusiastic, friendly and I even spotted a few with great personal style.

Here are some Tweetable nuggets I learned:

  • The three P’s of community building: people, passion, perseverance
  • Every brand needs to get real people saying real things about the brand all the time.
  • The degree of emotion your content provokes is important for viral sharing.
  • Design campaigns to get a reaction.
  • The more chatter on a product, the more sales increase.
  • When you are true to yourself, that’s going to get the most response.
  • You have to be in the conversation and claim your stories. If you don’t, someone else will.
  • If you need to do damage control, make it a conversation and ask your audience how you can do better.
  • Fans feel closer to a brand when they can see them being human and vulnerable. If a brand is being overprotective of their messaging, it’s a turn off.
  • There is value in surprise and delight.
  • Give people a reason to start talking.
  • By tapping into human emotions and having human encounters, you stand out in a sea of marketing messages.
  • It’s not about having more followers, it’s about the depth of relationship with your fans – from collecting to connecting.
  • If it doesn’t spread, it’s dead.

The closing party took place at Madame Trousads Wax Museum. At first I was just dazzled by the rooftop view over Hollywood and the cupcakes with glitter sprinkles from The Goodie Girls and gourmet flavored water from the Waterbar. But then I ran into my pals Watch the Stars photographer Gennan Shippen, and LA Weekly/Hollywood Style Scene scribe Lina Lecaro and things really got nutty. We realized the Wax Museum was open just for party-goers. We ran wild taking pictures with all the celebrities from J-Lo to James Bond, Alfred Hitchcock to Audrey Hepburn and we had so many laughs along the way!

I love my social life!
